1st grade students kicked off painting this year through a collaborative process. To collaborate is to work together to make something; sometimes artists work individually, and sometimes they work as a team. As a table, students decided how to approach creating a large-scale mixed media piece. They used oil pastels and liquid watercolor to create an oil resist, a technique tying back to Kindergarten bird paintings.
The 1st grade students did such a great job of working together and trying new things. Some students each worked on their own area of the paintings, while other tables moved around the paper and added onto one another's layers. It was their choice as a team, and the conversations were very lively and involved. I am proud of the students' experimentation, and they are already on to another challenge: individual still-life painting!
